Legendary Bay Area real estate agent Joel Goodrich shares his thoughts on the state of the industry.
What has surprised you most about how the pandemic has affected real estate in San Francisco? The strength of the market. It underscores how some of the city’s historic neighborhoods such as Pacific Heights are truly one of the core luxury markets in the world and more immune to downturns.
What are people looking for these days that’s different from what they were seeking pre-pandemic? Outdoor space and views are much higher on buyers’ lists as they are spending more time at home. Home offices, media rooms and gyms are also more important.
What are some of the most desirable or most requested neighborhoods or areas right now? Pacific and Presidio Heights, Sea Cliff and the Marina.
What do you love most about your job? Working with clients in seeing their dreams of a new phase in their lives come true. Whether they are moving out of state or out of the country, moving here for the first time or buying their ultimate dream home in San Francisco, it’s been an extraordinary year. Businesswise, it has been our third-best year ever.
Can you describe your dream home? I live in my dream home! I was fortunate enough, back in 1999, to buy (sight unseen, that’s another story!) on the top floor of one of Nob Hill’s more iconic buildings, The Francesca. The neighborhood is our version of Paris—where I grew up part of the time—and the views are very New York. So I have my two favorite cities outside of San Francisco right here. I’m never leaving.
