What We're Obsessed With Right Now (exist) - 12

Compiled by Scott Lucas | October 23, 2013 | Story

Carolyn Alburger, Associate Editor: Further proof that the days of stuffy white tablecloth dining are waning, Quince is now doing light-hearted blind wine pairings with its new tasting menus. As you're nearing your last sip of each wine, their sommelier comes to the table to hear your guesses and tell you if you're right. You can put money on your bets, or just chill and sip. Either way it makes nine courses go by quicker than ever.

Ellen Cushing, Senior Editor: I'm going to see none other than RiFF RAFF tomorrow at 1015 Folsom and it's literally the only thing I've been thinking about all week.

Katherine Guzman, Editorial Intern: The BadLipReading Game of Thrones video. The first time I watched it, I not only laughed so hard I was crying, but I was watching at my desk here and had to stop every 3 minutes just to compose myself! I've since watched it a couple more times and it gets funnier every time.

Scott Lucas, Web Editor: I've just started reading Hyperobjects, which tries to account for entities that are not distributed in the usual local fashion in time or space—things like global warming, nuclear weapons, even evolution. How do we grapple with stuff that is so big that you can pretend it doesn't exist? Object-oriented ontology is where all the cool kids are working right now, and this book is a really helpful extension of that work in some very exciting directions.

Caleb Pershan, Editorial Fellow: I, for one, cannot wait for the new Arcade Fire Album produced by James Murphy. To whet your appetite, in case you haven't already, listen to this SNL skit/video that showcases their playful inventiveness.

Sean Pyles, Editorial Intern: Lady Gaga's new jam: "Do What U Want" featuring R. Kelly. Gaga released the second single off ARTPOP on Monday and it has been in my head ever since. The 80s power-pop synth recalls the more powerful Tear For Fears songs while R. Kelly's ever-sensual voice assures its proper place on the pop charts. And, as an added bonus, the single's cover art provides an impressive shot of Gaga's butt.

Stevanie Wanz-Blank, Editorial Intern: I hope this isn't inappropriate but, I'm currently obsessed with "Shreddies"— award winning flatulence filtering underwear. Apparently, through extensive testing, the carbon cloth or "zorflex" (the same activated carbon material used in chemical warfare suits) can filter odors 200 times the strength of the average flatus emission. We're talking about an end to the cruelty of dutch ovens and bedroom time faux-pas. These could potential save relationships and debunk the "silent but deadly" stigma.
