What We're Obsessed With Right Now (exist) - 16

Compiled by Scott Lucas | November 20, 2013 | Lifestyle Story City Life

Jon Steinberg, Editor-in-Chief: Former Chronicle columnist Gwen Knapp's epic story about Barry Bonds's past (he was nicer than you think!) and present (he's obsessed with pro cycling--go figure) in Sports on Earth. Which is a freaking great site, ps.

Diana Kapp, Contributing Writer: I hope GoldiBlox is ready for the flooooood of orders they are going to get as their amazing, Beastie Boys-inspired video goes viral. When I met this gal (and two other teams) of studly and whipsmart engineers for my story, "Annie, Get Your Screw Gun," I knew change was afoot. But I didn't anticipate this! I'm psyched for them—and for my two girls.

Carolyn Alburger, Associate Editor: I love the idea behind Luke's Local's new Thanksgiving delivery service. They'll send our editors' favorite BN Ranch turkey right to your doorstep with all the fixins' from local artisans, like Black Jet Baking Co.'s Pumpkin Pecan sticky buns and crazy good gluten-free stuffing made from day-old loaves from Bread SRSLY.

Ellen Cushing, Senior Editor: Jhumpa Lahiri just keeps getting better and better, and her new-ish novel, The Lowland, is, I think, the best book yet: A sweeping, intimate, utterly gorgeous look at the way family—and familial obligation—can break us apart and bring us together. Highly recommended!

Sara Deseran, Editor-at-Large: Like many women in San Francisco, I live in boots. My favorites by far are these little Coclico booties available at Gimme Shoes. They're incredibly comfy but have a tiny, stylish little heel. Like every spendy purchase, you have to prorate it to alleviate the guilt. But if you wear the boots all year long, at $430, they're really only $1.17 per day. And I think well worth it. (Ilana, our photo editor, would agree, I think. She has them in brown.)

Katherine Guzman, Editorial Intern: The beignets from Spruce. They just started offering brunch and these beauties are on the menu as a "for the table" selection. A pile of airy dough balls rolled in sugar and a hint of cinnamon, served alongside two dipping sauces: crème anglaise and raspberry preserves. My dining partners were lucky they got more than one beignet because I took these down like a vacuum! I'm already planning my next "brunch" there, I'll sit at the bar and order these and then a maybe a burger, for good measure.

George McIntire, Editorial Intern: Kanye West's video for "Bound 2" is a triumph for humanity's ability to redefine what the meaning of art is.

Scott Lucas, Web Editor: Bob Dylan's video for "Like a Rolling Stone" is a triumph for humanity's ability to redefine what the meaning of art is.

Caleb Pershan, Editorial Fellow: One of my favorite New Yorker stories takes place over the course of a Thanksgiving break: A Sentimental Journey, by Peter Taylor. Perfect if you're traveling this week. Don't read the summary next to it because it contains mild spoilers.

Stevanie Wanza-Blank, Editorial Inter: As much as I love San Francisco, one of my biggest complaints (besides rent of course) is that we don't have seasons. I know, get over it already. Well...I can't. Which is why I'm currently obsessed with getting out of the city—like going north on Highway 29 through Napa to Harbin Hot Springs. The drive was gorgeous, with all the vines and trees changing colors, and Harbin is delicately tucked into the hills with a little creek running through it. The LOTR nerd inside me was reminded of Rivendell. And although the natural salt baths are clothing optional, with the overriding option being nakedness, they're quite soothing. Plus, there's beautiful hikes to be had and you can sleep in a dome.
