Ellen Cushing, Senior Editor: Do you love CHEAP STEAK and OLDER MEN PLAYING GERSHWIN ON THE PIANO? I.e. do you have ears and eyes and a mouth and a heart? Then get thee to THE ALLEY, one of the last remaining piano bars in the Bay Area, where a mere $12 buys you a steak, a baked potato, mixed vegetables, garlic bread, a salad, and as much of Rod Dibble's fleet-fingered goodness as you can possibly handle in one sitting (spoiler: it's a lot). It's one of my favorite places in the actual world.
Sara Deseran, Editor-at-Large: If someone wanted to get me a Valentine's Day gift, it would be tickets to see Thao and the Get Down Stay Down at the Fillmore on February 14. (Husband, are you reading this?)
Ted Gioia, Editorial Intern: There are many things I love about The Believer, but what I appreciate most are their recurring columns where they simply allow talented writers to write on what interests them each month—a reliable formula for interesting reading. My current favorite is Nick Hornby's truthfully titled "Stuff I've Been Reading" which always begins with a list of "books bought" followed by a list of "books read". There's no other literary column I read that's consistently less topical and more enjoyable.
Scott Lucas, Web Editor: The Real World SF (I'm sorry, The Real World Ex-plosion) comes out tonight. I can't wait to meet the cast, which are sure to be the most hated out of towners ruining San Francisco since the last graduating class of Yale finance bros moved here after graduation to work for start ups.
Sean Pyles, Editorial Intern: I am presently obsessed with this year. The New Year. 2014. So much can and will happen in the 357 days that remain of this year, and I'm ready for it. Bring it, 2K14.
Jon Steinberg, Editor-in-Chief: I just watched the Shamu-is-evil documentary Blackfish on Netflix, and Jesus, what residual guilt I feel for going to SeaWorld all those years! The film is an air-tight indictment of the aquatic park industry and has convinced me that hungry orcas should probably be unleashed on their cold-hearted captors.
