All the Rage: Grown-up Grilled Cheeses

Hot: The American Grilled Cheese Kitchen
In late December, the second location of this hipster haven tried to “soft open” in the Mission, only to be met with lines out the door. If you have time for the lunchtime wait, order the Jalapeño Popper, which sandwiches goat cheese, Monterey jack, jalapeño-apricot relish, and smoky bacon between slices of crispy-soft levain from local bakery Pinkie’s. Each bite begs for a dip in the menu’s pimentón-spiked tomato soup.

Hidden: Chomp N’ Swig
Tucked away on a quiet block, this beer-centric hole-in-the-wall may be the best-kept secret of the Inner Richmond. Order the sourdough and white-cheddar grilled cheese slathered with a lethal dose of bacon butter. To go with it? A bottle of Ommegang Abbey, which is just one choice from the surprisingly awesome selection of 50 or so bottles.
