With storied origins in 1896, Anchor Brewing Co. is as quintessentially San Francisco as the Gold Rush Era it blossomed from. Since then, the craft leaders have upheld the city's ingenuity and persevering spirit, devotedly delivering creative and quality beers through earthquakes, fires, and Prohibition. In 1965, Anchor entered a revolutionizing revitalization, refining their classic Steam Beer while also unveiling the first American Pale Ale, and later their Porter, Lager, traditional Christmas Ale, and more.
This stimulating revamping was all thanks to Anchor's new owner at the time, Fritz Maytag. As a Stanford graduate and recipient of both the James Beard Foundation’s Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional and Lifetime Achievement Awards, his commitment to elevating the company is now memorialized in the new book, the party of which he happened to grace.

With plenty of comically witty "mic-drop" moments, Maytag's charming visit to the brewery's party only further solidified the warmth and kindness the company is known for. Sitting delightfully in the cute Potrero Hill neighborhood, the generous brewery's main foyer and copper tun rooms that Tuesday evening were radiating with a sense of familial admiration and glee for the company's triumphs through time.
Guests were able to take photos, have their book personally signed by the Brewery Historian David Burkhart, and enjoy dinner and drinks amid a talented live jazz band, all with an elevated view of impeccable downtown skyline.
The book itself elucidates the full, genuinely transparent, and awe-inspiring story of Anchor Brewing through insightfully heartfelt text and 300 remarkably preserved images. Recipes for their signature four beers- their Anchor Steam®, Liberty Ale, Porter, and their California Lager are also a key highlight, along with a recounting of Janis Joplin's 1965 photoshoot onsite.
The much-anticipated book also embodies another legendary milestone for the local treasure, solidifying that Anchor Brewing's history is forever memorialized and will only continue to thrive.
Anchor Steam is as authentic and unpretentious as their beer, and to learn more, book a fun tour, or purchase a copy of their book, you can visit their site.
