On Friday, November 4th, the Swedish American Hall welcomed investigative journalist and talented internet superstar Andrew Callaghan for two sold-out back-to-back shows that included sneak peeks to his new film, San Francisco-exclusive footage, and even live performances.
Known for his group Channel 5 Live, Andrew first rose to prominence with his Quarter Confessions reporting in New Orlean's Bourbon Street before exploding onto the journalism scene with his captivating YouTube channel All Gas No Brakes in 2019 where he completed a 70-day hitchhiking adventure, and later the 2021 Channel 5 web profile series.
Channel 5, where he sheds light on fringe, non-traditional, or conspiratorial corners of the nation through comically deadpan interviews, has garnered him a dedicated following for his commitment to delving into such communities, now even being compared to Hunter S. Thompson as today's "gonzo journalist" in his avant-garde and unconventional approaches.

As the crisp fall evening set, the legendary Swedish American Music Hall piled in a packed house of Andrew's most adoring fans, all hyped up to see the contemporary luminary in person and witness his latest journalistic endeavors. While the show maintained a casual and lighthearted ambience, the audience knew to expect that Andrew will discuss topical political subjects often controversial or uncomfortable for the sake of edification and awareness.

This notion was immediately apparent as the show began with a preview of his new upcoming film with studio A24 that focuses on the events and people that led up to the January 6th capitol insurrection. Snippets of this film included several of his deadpan character profiles typical of his style, complete with his sardonic, yet in-depth immersion that has defined his reporting as fascinating, mesmerizing, and subtly critical.
This new film, in partnership with Abso Lutely Productions of Tim and Eric fame, has Andrew entering new and more volatile environments, tackling America's recent sore spot with a bold dark-comedy approach to better facilitate understanding, action, and progress.

Following the preview came more exclusive clips, including showing their grassroots interviews at San Francisco's own Folsom Festival, with a special live appearance from Sidam, a masked interviewer in his troupe.
Longform character profiles and a preview of Andrew's animation project were also shown, displaying the 25 year old's prowess in creating both impactful slice-of-life narratives and fun cartoon entertainment.

Also making a grand appearance on stage was local Jimmie Fails, who created and starred in the award-winning semi-autobiographical 2019 film, The Last Black Man in San Francisco. Fails facilitated a thought-provoking Q&A, in which he and the audience inquired to Callaghan on topics like how he finds these eclectic communities and fringe events, and how he maintains journalistic composure.
Callaghan's responses were professional, eloquent, and truly enlightening, displaying reverence when one spectator compared him to famous 60's San Francisco gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson.

The vibrant night was equally amusing as it was compelling, reminding the audience that humor (albeit dark), can be a disarming and demystifying approach to exposing and discussing issues that are uncomfortable or need ameliorating. Andrew has risen as an essential must-watch contemporary of our internet zeitgeist through successfully balancing such aspects to provide news entertainment that is factual, transparent, and uniquely ingenious.
Andrew will continue his tour across America, which you can view his stops here, as well as watch his Channel 5 YouTube interviews here.
