San Francisco sits proudly at the intersection of significant Chinese history and passionate environmentalism, and the city’s own Z & Y Restaurant aims to celebrate this.
Located at 655 Jackson St in the heart of Chinatown, the award-winning Z &Y offers deliciously fresh and exquisitely refined vegetarian and vegan Chinese cuisine.
Prepared artfully by Chef Han, his emphasis on authentic Szechuan flavors through native ingredients has yielded a successful, expansive, and enticingly fiery menu highly sought-after by numerous prestigious dignitaries.
Described as “excellent Chinese food with an unique twist,” Z & Y Restaurant began its accomplishments back in 2011 as a Zagat-rated restaurant. They have since maintained this status, moving up to receive even more recognition.
In 2015, the restaurant garnered a coveted Bib Gourmand Michelin ranking, followed by being included as one of the Bay Area’s Top 100 restaurants in 2016 by San Francisco Chronicle food critic Michael Bauer.
“Han has a way of balancing fiery, numbing Sichuan peppercorns and other chiles with whole fish, beef tendons, pig feet, sliced pork or whatever he’s preparing,” Bauer extols, “it’s surprisingly hard to choose a loser.”
For Chef Han, quality is vital just as much as the customer’s satisfaction. Han states, “I love to see the happy smiles on the faces of customers after they taste my authentic food made with fresh and healthy ingredients.” With each meal handcrafted and made with care and dedication, it’s no surprise several Chinese presidents, Foreign Ministers, and dignified Consulates have flocked to San Francisco just to sample Chef Han’s inviting cuisine and atmosphere.
As for their year-round offerings of vegetarian and vegan Szechuan, the ones key to try, if you’re up for the spicy challenge, are the Stir-Fried Chinese Cabbage with Chili Pepper, Bean Jello in Red Chili Sauce, and Spicy Cucumber Salad.
Other mellower, but equally delightful provisions include their lucious Tan Tan Noodles, Scallion Pancake, and Eggplant with Basil.
Stop in during this Earth Month and truly savor their care and appreciation of fresh produce, respecting and uplifting their natural flavors in traditional and innovative ways.
