While 2020 may have seen California’s overall population decrease for the first time in the state’s history, the Bay Area’s stronghold as the nation’s most expensive city remains intact.
A new report by Property Shark breaks down the actual sale prices of homes sold in 2021, and on a list of the 100 most expensive zip codes across the country, the Bay Area claims a whopping 47. For the purposes of this study, Property Shark declared the Bay Area as the counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Mateo, Sonoma and Solano.
The city of Atherton continues to dominate the market, earning its title as the most expensive zip in the United States for an impressive fifth year in a row. The median sale price for the San Mateo County community was $7,475,000, about $2 million more than the runner-up city of Boston.

The Bay Area continued to dominate the top 10 as Ross and Los Altos claimed the ninth and tenth place ranks with a median sale price of $4,583,000 and $4,052,000 respectively. Property Shark noted that 2021 marked the first year all top 10 most expensive zip codes cleared the $4 million mark.
It’s not hard to imagine that the counties of the Bay Area also reigned supreme. Santa Clara ranked as the second most-expensive county in the U.S., followed closely by San Mateo. The tech industry’s massive presence in the cities of Menlo Park, Mountain View, Palo Alto, San Jose and Sunnyvale keep prices in these counties high.
Even at the bottom of the list, the Bay Area held fast, counting the three last spots at 99 and 100 with Palo Alto's 94303 at $1,633,00; and San Francisco's 94122 at $1,627,000. Indeed, the city of San Francisco counted seven zip codes on the full list alone.
As readers may have noticed, Boston had one of the biggest bumps in 2021, coming in at No. 2 on the list. Miami Beach's 33109 also saw a massive jump of 66 percent year-over-year, becoming the fifth most expensive zip code in the country and the only Florida zip to make the list.
Los Angeles remains the most expensive county with 21 zip codes on the ranks, and California as a state maintains is crown.
