DOGPATCH BARBER AND SHAVE
Hometown barber Christopher Eliares (aka Cream the Barber) finally opened his own salon in 2014. While the decor is slightly retro—wood-paneled walls and a barber’s pole—the styling techniques are cutting-edge. Eliares and his seven co-barbers have true range: They’ll take a little off the top or whip up pompadours, fades, undercuts, lineups, portraits and freestyle designs, plus shaves and beard trims. The cuts are meticulous and the vibe unpretentious. 2632 3rd St.
Shorty Maniace is as close to a celebrity barber as you can get (dubbed one of the best by Esquire, called the “Rock and Roll” barber by VH1 and featured in GQ), but his Nopa shop is all neighborhood. Smocked barbers stand in front of old-school chairs and oak vanities as they give hot-lather beard trims, straight razor shaves and haircuts. The staff are happy to take direction, and even happier to hand you a beer or a whiskey when you walk in the door. 351 Divisadero St.
This casual barbershop has the feel of your grandpa’s library: a dark wood interior piled high with memorabilia. It’s a popular spot for a quick men’s cut, but it also has stylists itching to play with longer manes. 1528 Grant Ave.
