As one of the oldest sites dating back to the Civil War, at the very northern tip of San Francisco is Fort Point, for which our impeccable local beer is named after. This magnificent fortress right underneath the Golden Gate Bridge was initially intended to protect against the Confederate Army, yet was never utilized as the war ceased before their arrival. Today the expansive site is preserved and remains as an awe-inspiring architectural feat that invites you to explore all of its intricate hallways and rooms.
Definitely climb your way to the top for a stunning photo op with the bridge towering right above you!

You may know Fort Mason as the popular hostspot for food trucks, art fairs, and coffee conventions, but it once held the Military Command Headquarters between California and Hawaii. The area now retains its spacious pavilions and preserved buildings both for a tourist spectacle, and for a rejuvinated bazaar of must-visit fun events.
This is the perfect destination after a short and sunny hike just past Fisherman's Wharf and Ghiradelli Square. Be sure to catch the elevated view of Alcatraz Island as well!
Fort Funston Rd / Website
Once the Lake Merced Military Reservation in 1900, this fort was prominent up until the Cold War, due to its panoramic southern view of the Pacific Ocean and defensively tall cliffs. Now enemy-free, it finds a serene revamping as both a highly-coveted paragliding destination from its optimal breeze, and as a playful zone for off-leash dogs!
We recommend not missing out on its neighboring San Francisco Zoo, or its horseback riding-friendly promenades.
601 Murray Cir. Sausalito / Website
Take a trip up to Sausalito for this vast fort that maintains both striking batteries and an exclusive view of the Golden Gate Bridge, and Fort Point! Like its San Francisco antipode, this military base was built during the Civil War, later functioning as stations for the latter two global wars. Its use as a recreational area came in the 90's, where it now continues to entice visitors to immerse themselves in the remaining architecture.
Definitely do not miss out on the other batteries near it all along the Marin Headlands while you're up here!
4150 Clement St / Website
First erected for the Spanish-American War, this valiant building was vital as a coastal defense during the Pearl Harbor attacks. With that tumultous period long gone, indulge in this delightful Lands End destination as both a scenic picnic viewpoint just shortly past Sutro Baths, and as an artfully rustic community skate spot.

These gloriously green metal bunkers are unmissable in the Marin Headlands. With a thrilling half-mile tunnel connecting this overlook to Fort Cronkhite, this forested gem invites you to climb all around and experience the era's ingenuity and resilience. This is an amazing side journey when making an excursion to either the Point Bonita Lighthouse or to Rodeo Beach. Just be sure to pack a jacket because it can sometimes be chilly!
All of our preserved military structures stand as testaments to our historic fortitude and perserverance past the darkest and challenging eras. Exploring all around them today will truly imbue you with a sense of amazement and adventure.
