With the San Francisco Bay Area being a pivotal ground for punk music, the iconic fashion movements that emerged from this era also influenced global trends that continue to persist today. The radical anti-establishment outspokenness that fueled punk lyricism also naturally permeated into the wardrobe choices, with artists adopting ripped or unconventional fashion otherwise considered improper.
One of the formative leaders of this rebellious rebuttal was fashion visionary Vivienne Westwood, along with her then-boyfriend Malcolm McLaren, the manager of The New York Dolls and the Sex Pistols, in 1970's UK. Adopting an "anti-fashion" and "anti-materialistic" goal, their Chelsea boutique became instantly frequented by contemporaries like Siouxsie Sioux, with Sex Pistols members and the Pretenders' Chrisse Hynde gladly helping as shop assistants. Soon after, the Ramones, Led Zeppelin, Blondie, Black Flag, and more were all embodying the defiant aesthetics that disobeyed classically refined sensibilities, all in their own personalized ways. What appeared consistent though were aspects like ripped black skinny Levi's, utilization of safety pins, tattered shirts, and leather jackets with risque or deliberately offensive embellishments.
Through the 80's and 90's, bands like Joy Division and The Cure continued to maintain not only the aesthetics, but also the sentiments behind them in response to their times. Particularly in the Bay from pioneers like Dead Kennedys and Green Day, today our local fashionable and avant-garde spirits remain alive and well. If you aspire to channel some vintage punk to resist and defy modern expectations and adversaries, these hip stores are waiting for you.
