A rash of violent late-night attacks on cyclists in the Panhandle has police scrambling to respond. At a community meeting last night, the SFPD confirmed six incidents, the most recent of which was Friday night.
According to police, the first attack occurred on Friday, October 3rd with two more coming the day after. All of the incidents have taken place after dark, ranging from 8:50 pm to 1:20 am. In one, a bike rider had an empty beer bottle smashed over his head and his bike stolen. Several bikes have been stolen and one cyclists sustained serious injuries.
On Monday night, police detained two suspects in the Panhandle who may have been involved. However, police have still increased patrols in the area. The San Francisco Bike Coalition has released a set of safety tips here.
