A sunny day at the beach in Half Moon Bay turned tragic as a man died after a sand tunnel he had dug collapsed on him.
State firefighters responded to an emergency call at 5:30 pm last night to find a man in his 20s, whose name has not been released, trapped in a ten feet deep hole, part of which he had dug himself. The man was completely covered with sand.
After thirty-five minutes of work, more than thirty firefighters—some of whom were using specialized equipment—managed to free the man, but he had died before they could rescue him.
One firefighter was quoted as saying, "It was a nice, sunny day at the beach and there were a lot of people out. It should serve as a reminder that even digging in the sand can be dangerous and that people need to exercise caution."
