Brand to Know: Erica Tanov Home

Lauren Murrow | April 26, 2013 | Lifestyle Story Shopping

Like fashion power players Vera Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, and Donna Karan before her, Bay Area designer Erica Tanov is heeding the lure of the “lifestyle brand” and launching an eponymous home collection. She released a vibrant range of quilts—their prints inspired by Berkeley artist Emily Payne—earlier this spring, and the second, expanded installment arrives this month. The latest color-flaunting batch is a collaboration with Creative Growth, a nonprofit center for artists with disabilities, and includes bedding, table linens, shower curtains, and pillows. Tanov pored over the Oakland center’s archives, selecting eight works to interpret into prints. The resulting collection is luxurious (bedding is printed in India; alpaca throws are knitted in Bolivia) but unfussy. Tanov’s favorite: a black and white image of a girl sticking out her tongue, overlaid with gold embroidery—an adaptation of a drawing by artist Merritt Wallace. “At first, it looks like this sensuous bohemian print,” she says. “But when you look again, you see that it’s funny.” It’s a sensibility with which she surrounds herself in her Berkeley home as well: “beautiful, but not too serious.”
