Brunch Madness: (1) Foreign Cinema Vs. (8) The Butler and the Chef

Theodore Gioia | March 17, 2014 | Food & Drink Story Eat and Drink

Who has the best brunch in the city? Our first ever Brunch Bracket pits sixteen of the city's most popular brunch spots in a single elimination, fight-to-the-death tournament. Our food editor Rebecca Flint Marx seeded the contenders, but it's your votes that decide who wins. Every weekday, you'll have a chance to vote on the day's matchup until we decide our ultimate winner.

Winner: Foreign Cinema 95%. Runner-Up: The Butler and the Chef 5%.

Today's match-up:

(1) Foreign Cinema
Address: 2534 Mission St. (near 21st St.)
Signature Dish: Balsamic Fried Eggs
Vibe: Self-consciously chic—industrial European meets Modernist hipster
Representative Patron: The city cognoscenti who enjoys name-dropping Bergman but won't sit through his movies
Weakness: Is Oaxacan style calamari and Tunisian mixed grill too much for the Sunday brunch crowd?

(8) The Butler and the Chef
Address: 155 S. Park Ave. (near 3rd St.)
Signature Dish: Niman Ranch ham Eggs Benedict
Vibe: Cute Paris bistro without the Parisians
Representative Patron: The bubbly girlfriend in a long-term relationship who uses emoticons in emails and spells amazing "amaaaaaaaazing"
Weakness: Traditional sometimes equals boring

Do you prefer to start your Sunday mornings with $3.50 oysters or $3.50 croissants? Can the neighborhood bistro pull off the upset against the Mission powerhouse? The poll will be open for 24 hours, so jump onto Twitter and Facebook to rally your friends!
