Brunch Madness Championship: (2) Brenda's French Soul Food Vs. (3) Mama's on Washington Square

Theodore Gioia | April 4, 2014 | Story Restaurants

Who has the best brunch in the city? Our first ever Brunch Bracket pits sixteen of the city's most popular brunch spots in a single elimination, fight-to-the-death tournament. Our food editor Rebecca Flint Marx seeded the contenders, but it's your votes that decide who wins. Every weekday, you'll have a chance to vote on the day's matchup until we decide our ultimate winner. Yesterday, number two seed Brenda's French Soul Food convincingly defeated number four seed Zuni Cafe, and today our Championship match begins. Voting will be open all weekend—and on Monday we'll finally know who has the best brunch in San Francisco.

Winner: Mama's on Washington Square 52%. Runner-Up: Brenda's French Soul Food 48%.

Today's match-up:

(2) Brenda's French Soul Food
Address: 652 Polk St. (near Eddy St.)
Signature Dish: Shrimp and grits
Vibe: Clean and clear, nothing to distract you from the food
Representative Patron: The grizzled comfort-food connoisseur who knows its harder to find good grits than good sushi in the city
Weakness: They haven't had a close game yet. Can they handle the battle-scarred voting veteran of Washington Square?

(3) Mama's on Washington Square
Address: 1701 Stockton St. (at Filbert St.)
Signature Dish: "Our Famous" Monte Cristo
Vibe: It's hard to get much of a vibe while waiting in line, but shall we say sidewalk chic?
Representative Patron: Diehard pancake purists who apparently really love internet brunch polls
Weakness: They may have the same voting base as Brenda's (but don't have beignets)—who will land the swing voters?

It turns out San Franciscans prefer their brunch traditional and tasty: But who will win this comfort food clash? Do you prefer to pair brunch with Southern cream biscuits or San Francisco sourdough? Do you satisfy your sweet tooth with beignets or baked goods? Will Brenda or Mama be crowned the city's brunch queen? Vote here to let us know your pick. The poll will be open for throughout the weekend until Monday at 10 am, so jump onto Twitter and Facebook to rally your friends!
