Christopher Gate discovered his love of building at an early age while watching his carpenter grandfather restore and transform their family home in England. He’d always loved working with his hands and it didn’t take long before he too began building and fixing things around the house. By the time he moved to San Francisco, Gate’s passion for building was solidified. After honing his skills apprenticing under one of the city’s master builders, he founded his own firm, Christopher Gate Construction in 2005.

One of their recent projects involved a complex ground-up renovation to transform a San Francisco Victorian into a more contemporary and functional family home. On this particular project, the Victorian facade needed to be fully preserved which required rebuilding the entire home around the historic exterior. The team exceeded the homeowner’s expectations and what was once was a dark and outdated home is now a modern, light-filled space that still honors its historic roots.
“For me, our work is not just about building houses – it’s about the people who live in it,” says Gate. “Seeing a client enjoy their home once a project is complete and knowing that we had a part in creating that is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job.”
