California Weekend Bucket List for 2013

Jenna Scatena | January 2, 2013 | Story Travel Weekend Escapes California Destinations

Go on a brew tour from San Francisco to San Diego.

California’s micro brew scene is booming right now, and summer is the best time to imbibe along the coast. Here are some must-do stops: Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s new taproom in Buellton, the soon-to-open Angel City Brewing in LA, and Stone Brewing in San Diego (I hear the wild boar baby back ribs at the adjacent bistro are worth the trip alone). The San Diego Brewer's Guild has a wealth of information about local breweries, including itineraries.

Sunbathe on some of SoCal’s best rooftops.

Namely the rooftop at the Canary Hotel in Santa Barbara, which has 360 degree views of downtown, the Santa Ynez Mountains, and the Pacific and features a pool, hot tub, and an outdoor fireplace. Next on the list is the rooftop (with pool) of the recently renovated Le Montrose in LA with a skyline view of the city.

Ski Mammoth.

Thanks to new nonstop flights from San Jose, Mammoth is now accessible for a quick weekend trip. The Tamarack Lodge has romantic lakeside cabins a stone's throw from the lifts.

Do the ultimate San Francisco staycation.

San Francisco is one of the best tourist cities in the country, yet when most of us want a vacation, we skip town. This year, make a list of all the things you've always wanted to do in SF (the double decker bus tour actually is kind of fun) and stay at the the renovated Hotel Adiago or Hotel Zetta, opening early spring.

Go to Modernism Week in Palm Spring.

Learn more about the allure of desert modern architecture February 14-24 with a slew of tours, films, and parties. The new Hotel Lautner provides a livable midcentury piece of artwork in a revamped Frank Loyd Wright structure with four boutique rooms that resemble Don Draper’s apartment, with succulent-clad private patios.
