Kendall Hunter demonstrating proper scoring form.
The 49ers avoided a big trap game this weekend and improved to 10-1 all-time in the Eastern time zone under Jim Harbaugh with a relatively easy win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With another win or Arizona loss, the Niners are in the playoffs. Colin Kaepernick was a star (he must have read last week's recap), and the defense looked as dominant as ever.
So why am I still frustrated?
Call me picky, but Ahmad Brooks gets an offsides penalty every single game (he's not a rookie—hasn't he learned yet?), we still have no kick return game, Harbaugh and Kaepernick's time management is laughable, and even Michael Crabtree embarrassed himself with a silly unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. But never mind any of that. I'm here today to pick on one of the world's favorite players for the stupidest thing I've ever seen on a football field.
One of Kaepernick's perfect passes on Sunday was a half-field strike to tight end Vernon Davis, who made a nice reaching grab before strolling into the end zone...
...and possibly concussing himself against a wall in celebration.
No word yet on whether Davis has brain damage from running and jumping full speed into a lightly-padded wall, but speculation from notable sources (me) is that he may have had slight cognitive issues in the first place. Why the hell else would he do that?
I'm in no place to scold fully grown NFL players for running into hard objects. That's kind of Davis’ job. But Davis, normally a level-headed player, could not have possibly thought that celebration was a good idea, even with a surge of Hulk-like adrenaline running through him when he got to the end zone.
Let's count the potential ramifications here:
1. He misses the rest of the game if concussed (and he looked it after the TD), despite it being a pretty close game until midway through the 4th quarter. Losing a player like that can cost any team a close game.
2. He misses another game or two, and the 49ers can’t formulate a good offensive game plan and lose out to finish 10-6, barely missing the playoffs.
3. The 49ers make it to the playoffs, and because Davis’ frontal lobe is still bleeding, he’s unable to go in a must-win game on the road against a team like the Detroit Lions. The 49ers, despite being better across the board, lose and the season ends in an embarrassing fashion. Yeah. That sounds fun. But at least he scored, right?
You know who would never lose his head like that? Alex Smith. The Chiefs’ star quarterback who clinched his team a playoff spot yesterday with a five-touchdown performance. My head hurts.
