Cup of Joe at 8,000 feet

Michelle Bergmann | February 10, 2012 | Food & Drink Story Eat and Drink Travel Weekend Escapes California Destinations

On just another day skiing with the boys, Andy Wirth, CEO of Squaw Valley, noticed the hot cup of Starbucks steaming from the glove of pro skier JT Holmes, when a light bulb went off: “Wouldn’t it be nice to have a coffee without needing to remove your skis?”

Today marks the grand opening of the world’s first ski-in/ski-out coffee shop. A Starbucks perched atop the Gold Coast mountain of Squaw Valley at no less than 8,000 feet. Guests are invited to visit the ski-through, or what locals are already calling the “slide-through” window, and buy their favorite beverage before heading to the outdoor kiosk. Or better yet, they can take their lattes up the chair lift and savor it while skiing down the mountain. As for keeping Tahoe blue, trash receptacles will be located at the top and bottom of each run.

Have at it, caffeine-loving ski bums.
