“I was destined to work in the arts,” says Wynter Martinez, a Bay Area native who, from her photographer father and accountant mother, “learned the value of following one’s creative passions, but with a business mindset.”
“Being part of an organization at the forefront of artistic innovation inspires me every day,” says Wynter. As an advocate for diversity in the arts, she is an inspiration to others. When Wynter began her career, she says, “I’d often look around and be one of few people of color in the room, if not the only. It can be jarring not to see anyone who looks like you.” Wynter advises those starting out in the arts: “Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you’re in the room, you’re meant to be there—speak up! Sharing your individual experience is invaluable and may bring a completely unique perspective to a project. And, when necessary, be bold.”
Wynter’s work is not only instrumental in helping the company fulfill its mission “to nurture artistry and the development of creative expression in dance, through collaboration, performance, and education”—it keeps her on her toes, too. She makes this point: “No matter how many times I see the company perform, I’m always awestruck!”
