Dita Von Teese performs "Strip, Strip, Hooray!" in Los Angeles earlier this month.
Burlesque beauty Dita Von Teese last appeared in San Francisco on March 23rd, hinging on the arm of haute couture designer Jean Paul Gaultier for the opening of his exhibition at the De Young Museum. Now, she’s back, this time on her own terms, bringing “Strip, Strip, Hooray!” her burlesque revue, to the Fillmore for two nights of tassel-twirling, fan-waving fun (May 21st and 22nd). The lengthy show signals a comeback for burlesque; here are a few simple tricks of the trade you’ll need to join in. Catch "Strip, Strip, Hooray!" tonight at the Fillmore, 1805 Geary Blvd., get tickets here.
The costume: Miss Von Teese herself has worn corsets crafted at Dark Garden. Visit the Hayes Valley shop to pick out a ready-to-wear corset from their selection, or have one custom-made to your specifications. 321 Linden St., 415-431-7684
The moves: Learn how to take off your opera gloves just so from the Fishnet Follies’ School of Classic Burlesque. Their next Bay Area beginners’ workshop takes place July 11–August 1, but reserve your spot in the class soon, as they tend to sell out. Click here to register.
The make-up: Von Teese’s signature look is a matte red lip and cat eyeliner. You can easily track down a decent shade of lipstick (local makeup company Bare Escentuals makes one called ‘Red Zin’ that would fit the bill), but perfecting your liquid eyeliner will take some practice. Here's a video tutorial to get you started.
