How does a design firm take a legendary 1950s property known for its otherworldly mud baths and bring it forward for a new generation? That was the question asked by Jennifer Johanson, president and CEO of EDG Design, when approaching the monumental task of revamping Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs.
A vibrant mural by San Francisco-based Truth to Paper (@truthtopaper) covers a wall by the pool.
The answer lies in San Francisco-based SB Architects and EDG Design’s contemporary revamp of the Calistoga resort, revealed in June, which offers a modernized take of the historic space.
The Peloton King room features a Peloton bike in-room, a private porch with scenic Napa Valley views and a stocked apothecary medicine cabinet.
During the process, architects and designers maintained the original look and feel of the property while revitalizing the hotel and spa and incorporating lavish new additions throughout. “Our goal was to create a completely reimagined experiential wellness destination, while honoring the property’s legacy,” Johanson says.
Guests can soak in a spa garden tub during a stay.
Featuring a redesigned retro-inspired lobby, a new food and beverage building, and 50 completely refurbished guest rooms—including bungalows and a Victorian bunkhouse that sleeps 15—the renovation brings a fresh look to the wellness destination and new wellness opportunities for visitors.
This Truth to Paper mural flows from the wall to the ground, as if flowing directly into the pool that’s in front of it.
Works by local artists and handmade pottery from local ceramics studio NBC Pottery accent the spaces and add unmatched character to the place. Likewise, the design team’s transformation of the central parking space into a multiuse outdoor area for picnics or games—plus the addition of an open-air restaurant and bar—invites a sense of community. The restaurant, House of Better, is characterized by colorful, bold furniture to match the bright, fresh and nourishing Southwestern cuisine chef Trevor Logan offers from the kitchen. With a desert-inspired menu packed with vitamin C-rich green chiles, guests will leave feeling better than ever before.
The Spa Cottage boasts a luxe clawfoot tub along with a stocked apothecary medicine cabinet for the ultimate wellness retreat.
Incorporating local experiences and activities for the guests, Dr. Wilkinson’s fall programming makes good use of the new amenities and upgraded grounds. The resort’s fall Healthy Hour is chef Logan’s wholesome take on happy hour with several new nourishing beverage options, such as the Fire Cider Wellness Tonic. To taste the flavors of Calistoga, the Six Packed offering allows guests to turn their in-room fridge into a regional tasting experience with cans from local breweries, wineries and fermentories. Adventurous guests can enjoy the Hiking for Hedonists experience, where they can pick one of the three trails and bring a cooler packed with lunch for two and beverages from House of Better.
