Having moved to Los Angeles two years ago, artist Terry Urban was looking for a change of scenery from the concrete jungle of New York. “I wanted more nature, more of the ocean and surfing. Everybody seems to be a little bit more sunny and happy here,” said Urban on his cross country move. The artist’s quest for a new city to call home was motivated by his career return to painting. “Art basically saved my life. It brought me an open mind, it made me see art in a different way, like when The Wizard of Oz’s Dorothy (originally) was in black and white before she went to color.” Known for his vibrant use of colors in art with pops of dark imagery, Terry Urban believes California has already influenced his paintings through the new terrain, people and street art he’s witnessed. From the bustle of the thriving art district to the blissful Pacific shores, there is no shortage of daily inspiration for his next canvas.

The lauded artist appreciates the newfound opportunity to drive along the City of Angels’ scenic coastline. Terry Urban describes driving as a form of meditation. While he did not have the option to drive in New York City, his first car was nicknamed the Blue Dragon and served as a sanctuary for his skateboarder friends and his then 18-year-old self.
