A Burlingame home receives its aesthetic direction from designer Evgenia Merson.
THE PROJECT AND TEAM
A Burlingame couple with young children purchased a home while it was under construction, allowing them to select finishes. They tapped Evgenia Merson, principal at Evgenia Merson Design (evgeniamerson.com), to guide the design direction, source furnishings and make every room functional. “We wanted to approach design from a holistic perspective and honor the original architecture of the Tudor-style house,” says Merson, who selected furnishing and artwork that would complement the period and style.
THE SPACE
“The footprint of the living room is elongated and narrow,” explains Merson. “A design challenge was delineating the long space to create different uses and make the room feel more cozy.” She divided the room into three main zones with separate functions: the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams (@mgbwhome) sofa facing the fireplace for watching TV, a set of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams accent chairs with a Lawson-Fenning (lawsonfenning.com) side table for hosting.
VISUAL INTEREST
“Adding a vintage Italian daybed by the bay window from 1st Dibs (1stdibs.com) allowed us to add some interest to the space layout and the room flow,” says Merson. “It creates a beautiful vignette and functions as extra seating when hosting.”
STORAGE
“We selected this spacious storage cabinet, which is both architectural and functional, for stowing away the kids’ toys and clutter that accumulates throughout the week,” says Merson. “This cabinet from Lulu and Georgia (luluandgeorgia.com) by designer Sarah Sherman Samuel (@sarahshermansamuel) allows the living room to be a very family-oriented space and also enables the family to get it guest-ready in a matter of minutes.” An Enoki Natural Dome table from CB2 (cb2.com) and a Rhapsody area rug from Jaipur Living (jaipurliving.com) also grace the room.
FURNITURE FLAIR
“Wingback chairs are classic, sculptural seating, traditionally used close to the fireplace,” says Merson. “This particular chair design by Lawson-Fenning is a twist on the traditional wingback and has sweeping, modern lines that are elegant and organic. The mustard fabric we selected is tactile and luxurious, adding a fun splash of color.”
