Imagine this: Fifteen crisp white tents dotting Justin Herman Plaza under the mid-fall sunshine. Some 1200 hungry and thirsty revelers gather for a taste from roughly 40 Bay Area restaurants, many of them notoriously hard reservations to come by. Then there is wine galore, from 36 wineries and counting.
And the best part about San Francisco's annual FallFest? Yours truly and Editor-at-Large Sara Deseran will be leading chef and bartender demonstrations. This is your chance to find out how Lolinda’s chef makes chimichurri, how Trick Dog’s bar manager shakes up his sultry Leather and Lace cocktail, and many other tricks of the trade. •Duck liver mousse and cranberry Rice Krispies treats will be served at the stall for Bergerac, the smoking new SoMa bar-restaurant we previewed earlier this month. Chef Randy Lewis’ isn’t holding back the zany here. Give him the benefit of the doubt.
•It’s a big year for La Mar, which is celebrated its 5th Anniversary in San Francsico last night. You can try two of their classics: cebiche and a causa rusa, toothsome little mashed potato stacks tinged red with beets.
•For dessert, Stroopie Gourmet’s Dutch caramel cookies are always sinful. They make traditional thin waffle cookies on site and stick two together with a buttery thick caramel sauce. Drool.
•On the drinks front, cap the day off with a DIY Bloody Mary. I’ll be heading straight for a Bloody with Anchor’s crisp Junipero gin.
