Where should you go to get away from it all? Like, really get away—no 9 a.m. housekeeping knock, no strangers’ kids screaming at the pool, no cell phone reception. Lanai? Denali? How about Cloverdale? Or Aptos or Bolinas. (Nobody said you had to far to go off-the-grid!) Here, five summer-ready Airbnbs in the Bay Area that offer uninterrupted seclusion.
Wine Country Cabin
The digs: A small modern-day Theroux-style cabin with an intimate deck that’s surrounded by a garden. A red clawfoot bathtub sits near a floor-to-ceiling window that opens to sweeping views of the vineyards. The architecture is rustic chic, with wood and tin panels, and a small greenhouse attached to the back.
Perk: An infinity pool overlooking Alexander Valley.
Nearby: It’s a quick 15-minute drive to Healdsburg’s bounty of boutiques, restaurants, and wineries.
Romantic Beach Shack
The digs: Rustic beach meets coastal jungle. The opaque ceiling gives it a greenhouse feel, and the floors are made of red bricks. The bungalow’s interior is full of hibiscus, jasmine, and bouganvilla. At night, the wood stove fireplace keeps the place feeling cozy. By day linger on the sun-soaked deck, stroll the large lawn and gardens, or saunter down to the empty beach.
Perk: This private abode is only accessible via a walking path—there’s not even a street address.
Nearby: Brunch at the Coast Café in Bolinas.
The digs: A cozy studio in the redwoods of West Sonoma. A deck overlooks the 40-acre private ranch that has meadows and an apple orchard.
Perk: An outdoor shower and views from the canopy.
Nearby: Downtown Sebastopol—check out The Barlow, an artisan campus of wine tasting rooms, breweries, and restaurants.
Mountain Hippie Dome
The digs: A small studio beneath a geodesic dome that’s comprised of 144 plywood triangles, tucked in an oak forest. The bed is in the upper dome portion, with a triangular skylight that looks onto the trees outside. The owners have a permaculture farm on the property, with goats and chickens.
Perk: A garden that’s home to hundreds of hummingbirds throughout the summer.
Nearby: The Forest of Nisene Marks, which has 10,000 acres of hiking and mountain biking in the redwoods.
Coastal Micro Castle
The digs: Set on a perch just above the coastal fog line, this two-story hideaway overlooks a Syrah vineyard and the Pacific Ocean and is surrounded by oak and bay trees. The interior is Mediterranean, with terra cotta floors and wrought iron chandeliers, and a couple small decks with bistro tables that look out onto the valley.
Perk: Unlike the others, this has a full kitchen and dining room.
Nearby: The famous Wild Flour Bakery that bakes wood fired breads and Osmosis day spa.
