Google, Facebook Cut Ties With Climate Change Denying Right Wing Group

Scott Lucas | September 24, 2014 | Story Politics

After Google's Eric Schmidt announced on Monday that the tech giant would be ceasing its relationship with the American Legislative Exchange Council, known as ALEC, it appears that Facebook will also follow suit, according to the Chronicle.

The companies are under fire by environmentalists over ALEC's position on global warming. Or, as Schmidt put it, they are "literally lying" about climate change. That seems a little easier to parse, doesn't it? Today, it seems as if Facebook may leave the organization as well, with a spokesperson saying, "we are not likely to renew our membership in 2015." Yelp has also left ALEC under activist pressure, leaving ebay and Yahoo alone among targeted technology companies.

ALEC is a business-supported lobbying outfit that has been behind a number of controversial laws in states around the country, including the stand-you-ground gun law in Florida that played a role in the Trayvon Martin shooting. Companies including Coca-Cola, Kraft, General Electric, General Motors, and Microsoft have also recently left the group.
