Help! I'm Engaged to a Tigers fan!

Ben Christopher | October 24, 2012 | Lifestyle Story City Life

Whether it's Montague versus Capulet, to-mey-to against to-mah-to, love has a way of making such differences seem almost trivial. So we're told anyway—Shakespeare and Gershwin must not have known many baseball fans.

Take Scott Lucas, editorial intern here at San Francisco magazine. Since the beginning of the playoff season, he's watched his once happy engagement with Elena Foukes flounder on one insurmountable reality: He's from the Bay Area and a Giants fan, while she's a dyed-in-the-fur Tigers fan. Before any real damage is done during tonight's big game, we sat down with Scott and Elena to see if their relationship can survive the World Series.

SF: Scott, when did you first discover that your fiance is a Tigers fan?
SL: I learned that Elena was from Detroit when we started dating last year. But I guess I never realized she was a Tigers fan. Who knew that Detroit has a baseball team?
EF: It's been a real strain on the relationship. Back during the playoffs, Scott's father was threatening me to change allegiance to the A's. Since then, things have only gotten worse.

SF: And Scott, how about your relationship with the in-laws?
SL: We keep the discussion to football.

SF: Elena, this must be a very difficult time for you to be in the Bay Area. Thinking back on Detroit, you must feel a kind of separation anxiety.
EF: Absolutely. I find myself Googling Tiger-friendly sports bars in the city. I found a thread about it on Yelp, but all I could find were—well, I'm not sure you can print that ...

SF: Have you two settled on a neutral territory where you can watch the first game tonight?
SL: Usually, we go to a bar near us in North Beach called Maggie McGarry's, but last time we went, things got a little heated. Two guys were sitting on either side of us, watching the Giants plays the Cards. Both were totally drunk. One was a clear Giants fan and the other was wearing a Detroit Red Wings jersey. They kept yelling at each other over the tops of our heads.
EL: When San Francisco started winning, I decided to just be quiet about it so the Giants guy would keep buying me shots. That's really what being a Tigers fan is all about.

SF: How do you two plan to raise your children?
SL: Jewish.
EL: And maybe as hockey fans.

SF: I think we're making progress. In that same spirit of reconciliation and compromise, where can we find some common ground between you two?

EL: I think we can find it in the drinks we share during each game.
SL: Also, maybe, fuck the Yankees?
EL: Yes. Very true. Fuck the Yankees.

SF: Love conquers all.
