Holiday-Time Shows: Part Deux

Lani Conway | December 7, 2012 | Story Galleries and Performance

This holiday, take it one step beyond the typical tree lighting ceremony, window shopping, ice skating, and days in snow-drenched Tahoe. Add a little culture to the mix. Here are some more holiday shows and performances to add to our December issue selections.

"Bell, Book and Candle
Bill English directs the story of a powerful young witch who casts a love spell on an unsuspecting Greenwich Village publisher. This romantic comedy theater show originally debuted on Broadway in 1950 before going on to inspire Bewitched, the popular TV series starring Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York.
“Bell, Book and Candle,” Through Jan. 4, 2013 @ San Francisco Playhouse

Foodies! The Musical
‘Tis the season of good eats. But when you check out this laugh-out-loud production, leave pretentious foodie tendencies at the door. This Morris Bobrow written and directed musical comedy is packed with humorous songs and sketches about restaurant trends, food habits, and more.
“Foodies! The Musical,” Fri. and Sat., through Feb. 23 @ The Shelton Theater

"Wavy Gravy and His Guided Mistletoes"
Sit back and listen to the life and times of iconic activist, clown and inspiration for a former Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor—Wavy Gravy. This 90-minute performance is filled with fascinating, tie-died tales, like Wavy's arrest outside of San Quentin after protesting the death penalty.
“Wavy Gravy and His Guided Mistletoes,” Thurs., Fri., Sat., Dec. 13 to 23 @ The Marsh Berkeley

Schmaltz! A Barry Manilow Holiday Sing-Along
The Shotgun Players presents First Person Singular’s ode to one of pop’s greatest entertainers. This sing-a-long tribute to Barry Manilow includes toe-tapping renditions of “Mandy,” “Could It Be Magic,” and “Weekend in New England.”
“Schmaltz! A Barry Manilow Holiday Sing-Along,” Mon., Dec. 17 @ The Ashby Stage

The Snowman
A screening of the 1982 animated story about a boy who builds a snowman is accompanied by the talented stylings of the San Francisco Symphony. For adults, the second tier is transformed into a festive bar featuring refreshing drinks that can be taken right to your seat.
“The Snowman,” Sat., Dec. 22, 11 a.m. @ Davies Symphony Hall
