If You Think It's Cold Right Now, Just Wait Until Tonight

George McIntire | December 4, 2013 | Lifestyle Story City Life

Breaking news in the Bay Area—it's 5-10 degrees colder than usual today. Which means it's time to bust out that jacket you only wear in Tahoe.

During yesterday's morning commute, downtown's temperature hovered around 55. By contrast, this morning's commute was at 49 (source: those clock/thermometers you see outside banks). In East Coast terms, that six-degree difference seems minor, but this is the Bay Area, and we did not move here for that shit. On our 12-minute walk from BART to work, we practically succumbed to pneumonia.

Right now, most places on or near the Bay are suffering through a frigid 50-52 degrees. But the warmest place right now is San Francisco. Yes, we're currently at first place with 56 degrees, which means that Oakland really is cooler than San Francisco! And the inland Bay Area, long the refuge for San Franciscans in search of actual summer weather, is currently in Yukon territory, with temperatures in the mid-40s.

If we're lucky we might just barely make the 60-mark this afternoon, but don't ditch the puffy coats just yet because you might have to sleep in one. Tonight is expected to dip into the mid-30s. (That's almost freezing, you guys!) Even scarier, this cold snap isn't some sort of short-term aberration; the forecast for the next ten days calls for highs in the mid-50s and lows in the lower 40s. Jesus, when will it stop?

We suggest you use your lunch break to go buy a space heater at Home Depot before they sell out.
