Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer took a load of flak last spring when she ordered all the company telecommuters back into the office. Maybe she should try the carrot instead of the stick, like they do at The instant messaging company gives employees a $500-a-month stipend if they live within five miles of its Palo Alto office. “The stress of commuting can really take its toll on a person’s stamina and productivity,” says CEO Ralph Harik. ”This way, you can spend those two hours on something more relaxing, like exercising or hanging out with friends.”
