Designer Jeff Schlarb transforms a San Francisco home to reflect the homeowners’ love of travel and adventure.
The living room boasts a custom S-curve sofa from Eternity Modern and a pebble chandelier and sea urchin pendants from Coup D’Etat.
THE PROJECT
It’s abundantly clear that style is part of your life when Cashmere and Whiskey are your cats’ names. A San Francisco couple with a young son wanted to redesign their 5,539-square-foot home to combat its bland spaces. The wife recently launched a fashion company with a line of resort wear from Monaco, Cannes, Saint-Tropez and St. Barths, so they wanted an aesthetic that honored her sense of boundless adventure.
THE TEAM
The couple selected designer Jeff Schlarb, principal at Jeff Schlarb Design Studio (jeffschlarb. com), for the ambitious redesign. “This project was in my wheelhouse because my aesthetic is a little bit rock ’n’ roll but always rooted in classism,” says Schlarb. “I like to layer pattern and color, but I always balance that with neutral spaces that give the eyes a resting place. Something has to lead the dance in every room, so we create a focal point or a wow moment that becomes the center of the exploration in that room.”
The penthouse features a photograph by Tyler Shields.
THE GOALS
“I took a fashion-forward approach to designing their home so it would ooze with glamour and reflect their fun, eclectic lifestyle with nods to her luxury fashion line,” says Schlarb. “The design is layered with many colors, patterns, textures and luxury finishes, including leather, feathers and fur. Many rooms juxtapose soft, feminine touches alongside bold pieces.”
Schlarb notes his team only did a small amount of structural renovation, including some cabinetry and the reorientation of the media room to create the feel of a theater.
PENTHOUSE
“The couple loves to entertain, so we designed the home to be part of the fun,” says Schlarb, who notes the home’s centerpiece is a penthouse lounge with an adjoining outdoor fire pit on the top floor. “This room epitomizes the fashion-forward approach that we took with the home,” he says. “They are also world travelers—and she’s originally from Asia—so we wanted the space to feel eclectic and filled with art and treasures from their travels.”
The room features a provocative photo by Los Angeles-based photographer Tyler Shields (@thetylershields) from 1st Dibs (1stdibs.com), a pink ostrich feather chandelier from A Modern Grand Tour (amoderngrandtour.com), a custom sofa covered in deep burgundy performance velvet from Schumacher (schumacher.com) and a pair of swivel club chairs with an antique brass base from Coup D’Etat (coupdetatsf.com) covered in Noir de Lune fabric from Casamance (casamance.com).
Schlarb painted the vaulted ceiling with a striped design to match its shape and lined the room with a knotted Tibetan carpet by the Rug Establishment (therugest.com). Drapes from Romo (romo.com), Benjamin Moore (benjaminmoore.com), slate teal paint and satin brass sconces from Lightology (lightology.com) round out the room.
The formal dining room showcases a chandelier from Gabriel Scott, an ebony console from Coup D’Etat and handpainted ceiling wallpaper by Nicole Hayden.
LIVING ROOM
Comfort and style prevail in this space, which offers outstanding areas for gathering with friends. Standout pieces include a custom S-curve sofa from Eternity Modern (eternitymodern.com), a black Carrara Coffee table from France and Son (franceandson.com), wing chairs covered in black leather from Kravet (kravet.com) and a sling chair, pebble chandelier and sea urchin pendants from Coup D’Etat.
DINING ROOMS
Two dining rooms—one formal and one informal— won the hearts of the homeowners. Light bathes both areas, and Schlarb uses his signature creative touch to bring each one to life. In the formal room, he selected a chandelier from Gabriel Scott (gabriel-scott.com), an ebony console from Coup D’Etat, handpainted ceiling wallpaper by Nicole Hayden (@nicolehaydenart), brass and velvet side chairs from 1st Dibs and an oak table from Sloan Miyasato-Michael Berman (sloanm.com). Schlarb’s design studio crafted head dining chairs covered in gray mohair from Rogers & Goffigon (rogersandgoffigon.com).
The informal space, perfect for quick meals and casual gatherings among friends, features Nuevo (nuevoliving.com) chairs upholstered in Casamance velvet and a David Weeks (davidweeksstudio.com) chandelier.

SCREENING ROOM
Watching movies in the new screening room feels like a Hollywood dream, with custom lounge sofas covered in brushed chenille from Holly Hunt (hollyhunt.com), Parisian-pleat drapes from Pierre Frey (pierrefrey.com) and acoustic wallcovering from Elitis (elitis.fr). When the main lights dim, ceiling-mounted LED panels transform into a starry nightscape.
PRIMARY SUITE
The cozy room shines with a custom headboard covered in silk mohair velvet from Rogers and Goffigon, a wing chair from Arteriors (arteriorshome.com), hand-blown pendants from SkLO Studio (sklo.com) and a hand-knotted rug from Kush Rugs (kushrugs.com).
HOW THE HOME IS LIVING
Schlarb and his team have perfected creating spaces that pay homage to a lifestyle and worldview over many years. They understand how to read a room, as it were. Schlarb says about the couple and their reaction to their new home, “They’re thrilled with it!”
