After five years of collaborations with Loloi, Justina Blakeney launches two of her most exciting collections to date.
“My design approach, when it comes to rugs, has changed over time,” says designer Justina Blakeney. “But, after working with Loloi for five years, I now take a more holistic approach to rug design by thinking about the entire room and the space that the rug will live in.” One thing that has remained: Blakeney’s signature boho aesthetic. “We can build on past successes,” she adds, “but still continue to experiment with new designs, shapes, colors, silhouettes and constructions.”
And experiment they did. New for 2020, Justina Blakeney x Lolo releases two collections, Playa and Aries. Where Playa leans more neutral—a bohemian take on the classic natural fiber rug, with subtle colors and unusual textures—Aries is its graphic cousin—a line inspired by California’s unique landscape of city structure meets rolling hills and handwoven by artisans in India. But, as Blakeney explains, “The Aries and Playa collections have one thing in common: They were made for layering.”

In keeping with her personal style, the two collections play on that need for layering, texture and vibrant use of color. For the minimalist, a rug from either collection is a natural fit, adding interest to any room. “Or, if you’re like me and more of a maximalist,” says Blakeney, “you might layer a Feroz or Fante rug on top of one of the Aries or Playa rugs for a more visually exuberant look.”

Releasing in tandem are pillows that pair beautifully with the Playa and Aries rugs. “Though Justina’s collection with Loloi carries a bohemian-inspired aesthetic that is unique to her personal design style,” says Loloi principal Cyrus Loloi, “her designs also bring a fresh perspective that is very much in line with Loloi’s mission to offer a range of innovative, well-made, textile-based collections that enhance the interior and exterior areas of any space.”
