A La Carte Is on the Way out

Ted Gioia | March 4, 2014 | Story Restaurants

When it comes to à la carte, less is more in San Francisco’s restaurants—they’re upping the ante with prix fixe and tasting menus. start at $50 per person and work your way up to the big bucks.

This spring, Soma restaurant AQ is tossing its à la carte and going straight for a four-course, prix fixe offering (about $50) and a full tasting menu (about $80) that will rank among the city’s best deals. 1085 Mission St. (Near 7th St.), 415-341-9000

Bar bites are kaput at Keiko à Nob Hill, which, beginning February 19, offers only a full, 13- to 15-course tasting menu for $175. 1250 Jones St. (at Clay St.), 415-829-7141

Dominique Crenn wants “to tell a story” with Atelier Crenn’s new expanded tasting menus. On weekdays, there’s a $120, 7- to 10-course signature menu. For $195, you get the total grand experience. 3127 Fillmore St. (Near Filbert St.), 415-440-0460
