A young SF family begins with a blank slate and creates a masterpiece of vibrant design and endless views.
The dining room features head chairs from Coup D’Etat and vases from The Future Perfect.
THE PROJECT
A couple with two young children owns a 2,900-square-foot property at the Four Seasons Residences in San Francisco. Both are incredibly creative with a wide-ranging and beautiful aesthetic, and they needed to renovate their rooms to reflect their passions and the topsy-turvy reality of two children.
Designer Lorri Hicks Cazenave uses textures and colors that the homeowners adore from their travels.
THE TEAM
Lorri Hicks Cazenave, founder and creative director of Hicks Cazenave Interior Design (hcinteriordesign.com), became the couple’s choice to completely rethink every square inch of the home— from light fixtures to finishing touches. “We want to learn about our clients and how they hope to enjoy their space,” says Hicks Cazenave, who describes her style as classic modern with an artistic, eclectic touch. “We must create a design that reflects people and their stories, and we do that through collaborating with our clients.”
The highly functional kitchen boasts lighting from Pelle.
THE GOALS
The home was a blank slate with gorgeous marble and bespoke finishes as part of the Four Seasons Residences. “We wanted to inject the couple’s love of their recent vacations abroad into their new cityscape space,” the designer says. “They were inspired by raw materials, textures, woven colors and oceanside views, so we worked those into the designs along the skyline. To bring their vision to life, we sourced unique pieces from bespoke and vintage SF showrooms and one-of-a-kind pieces we collected from abroad.” The design team also wanted the spaces to take advantage of the city views.
For materials, the team sourced durable and comfortable fabrics that age well. They also selected pieces that “the whole family enjoys together, like a cozy sitting area in the media nook and a lovely space to eat and enjoy the downtown SF city views,” says Hicks Cazenave.
The living room showcases the design team’s brilliant use of scale, texture and art from Stephanie Breitbard Fine Arts.
LIVING ROOM
“As with everything we take on, we invited the opportunity to challenge our palette with new materials and the chance to experiment with scale juxtaposed against expansive views,” says Hicks Cazenave. “We created a soothing, calm environment with the backdrop of the city, and [we sourced] materials similar to a recent hotel they loved during a trip to a gorgeous resort in Mexico.”
Standout pieces in the room include a curved sofa in mohair velvet with a brass-tasseled side Elan Atelier (elanatelier.com) table and a green accent chair from Coup D’etat (coupdetatsf.com), a coffee table from Phillips Collection (phillipscollection.com), a pair of ivory boucle chairs and a stunning blue resin side table from Ironies (ironies.com). Artwork from Stephanie Breitbard Fine Arts (sbfinearts.com) completes the room.
“Our studio loves to scour for pieces to create that voila effect when paired,” says Hicks Cazenave, whose team found a vintage bench in a lilac boucle fabric from Coup D’Etat and paired it with an AJ Oishi (ajoishi.com) artwork from Stephanie Breitbard Fine Arts.
Hicks Cazenave’s design includes scouring showrooms for pieces that complete a space.
DINING ROOM
The dining room offers the best city views, and Hicks Cazenave wanted to let the backdrop steal the show while “adding playful and soft elements that marry with the rest of the space,” she says. The team selected head dining chairs from Coup D’Etat; JG Switzer (jgswitzer.com) Gotland gray wool fabric frames the chairs, and brown cotton velvet lines each for comfort. The side chairs are Rove Concepts (roveconcepts. com). Additional pieces include a sculpture and bright blue vases from The Future Perfect (thefutureperfect.com) and a blue accent table from Made Goods (madegoods.com).
The Hicks Cazenave design team brings joy and serenity into the primary suite with a shetland wool bed throw by JG Switzer and sculptural lamps by Made Goods.
KITCHEN
This highly functional space features a marble countertop that extends to the backsplash for a chic finishing touch against the lacquered cabinets. “We chose to style this area with antique and organic elements to play off the modern design of the space,” explains Hicks Cazenave, who selected items like a colorful marble bowl and ceramic vase from The Future Perfect. A custom light fixture from New York City’s Pelle (pelledesigns.com) tops the room.
A stunning soaking tub in the primary suite’s bath offers a soothing respite from the day.
PRIMARY SUITE
“We wanted to allow for city views from their chic canopy bed or a nice place to unwind with a seating area near the views—complete with a pair of swivel chairs and a cool sculptural coffee table from Noir Furniture (noirfurniturela.com),” says Hicks Cazenave. “Subtle painterly palettes and brushwork are hinted in the Dee Clements (studioherron.com) sculptural basket and shetland wool bed throw by JG Switzer.” The bedside tables boast a subtle waxed linen texture, and the sculptural lamps continue the serene vibes—both are from Made Goods.
The spalike setting of the primary suite extends into the bath with an exceptional marble dual vanity.
HOW THE HOME IS LIVING
“They have enjoyed the space with their little girls!” Hicks Cazenave says. “This has been a great home backdrop to their creative and busy lives. They can also grow [with the home] as their creative endeavors change and add bits of their travels into the art of the space.”
