Let's start with the good news: The suspect is now in custody and the the westbound lanes of the Bay Bridge are back open to traffic.
But this morning's commute into the city was backed up by one of the most bonkers scenes we can think of: An alleged fire-setting, police-taunting pickup truck driver who set his vehicle ablaze just past the toll booths this morning and then danced around as police and fire fighters tried to take control of the situation. Journalistic objectivity aside for one moment—holy shit.
According to the Chronicle, one witness said, "I saw a man dancing with a can of gasoline and laughing. He was laughing and taunting firefighters. It was chaos. They didn’t know what to do." Reports came in of the man around 8:17 this morning, with authorities subduing him and putting out the fire by 8:35.
We'll be sure to update as details emerge.
Update #1: The fire department is saying that no one was injuried in the incident and that an investigation is ongoing.
Update #2: The suspected arsonist has been placed in a 72-hour psychiatric hold at Oakland's Highland Hospital and authorities are not recommending that charges be pressed against him.
