A waterfront home received a makeover inspired by staggering views and natural light.
An Ophelia brass sculpted light pendant from 1st Dibs, dining chairs from McGuire and art from Nicki Adani set the stage for the gorgeous home in Tiburon.
THE PROJECT
A couple with three young boys owns a six-bedroom, seven-bath waterfront home in Tiburon with staggering views of San Francisco Bay. The 5,730-square-foot house was built in 1978 and renovated in 2008, but it still sported white interiors, a 1980s vibe and needed a complete makeover.
THE TEAM
The homeowners tapped Dawn Carlson, founder, co-owner and principal designer of MAS Design (masinteriordesign.com), for the ambitious project. She works with Carol Perry, the studio’s co-owner and principal designer.
“We take each project as something completely new,” says Carlson. “The site, the architecture and the clients inspire us to create something personalized and unique. Our work transcends styles, but whatever the aesthetic, we like to deliver timeless, curated spaces that are fresh, elegant and approachable. We believe the design is an outward expression of the clients, so the relationships we form are essential to the project’s overall success.”
Sculptural pieces help define the room and accentuate the views.
THE GOALS
While Carlson and her team tackled critical areas like the family and living rooms, primary suite, dining room and kitchen, she also reimagined areas like the entry, two offices, wine room, outdoor kitchen and lounge.
“The clients wanted something unique, a bit edgy but not unapproachable,” says Carlson. “They have a warm and loving family life, so we wanted it to feel calm and livable. We wanted unique pieces that perpetuated this warmth and respect. We wanted to bring in pieces [that showcased] the love of the craft and for the creator to be the project’s driving force.”
LIVING ROOM
Despite the views, Carlson says the space was a typical architectural box that felt unwelcoming. “We brought in Caroline Lizarraga (@caroline_lizarraga) to create a mural that would unite the vast heights and center the design as one inspired by creators,” says Carlson, who added an oil on linen painting above the sofa by Benjamin Guffee (bejaminguffee.com) via Stephanie Breitbard Fine Arts (@stephaniebreitbardfinearts).
Standout pieces include a sofa from Nina Edwards Anker (neastudio.com), Senufo side tables from 1st Dibs (1stdibs.com), an Arch bench from Montana Labelle (montanalabelle.com), a segment sofa from TRNK (trnk-nyc.com), a Nami chair from Baker (bakerfurniture.com) and a lava table from Phillips Collection (phillipscollection.com). A Moroccan Amble rug from Beni Rugs (benirugs.com) lines the room beautifully.

DINING ROOM
This area shares a fireplace with the living room. “Being a more intimate space, we commissioned a painting of the family by Nicki Adani (@nickiadani), added a stunning sculptural piece visible from both rooms and designed a custom dining table,” says Carlson. The team selected an Ophelia brass sculpted light pendant from 1st Dibs and dining chairs from McGuire (@thisismcguire).
KITCHEN
The kitchen was renovated before the couple purchased the home, so Carlson fronted the island with shou sugi ban from Reclaimed Design Works (reclaimeddesignworks.com) to merge the space’s aesthetic with the rest of the house.
“We custom-made the breakfast nook table and upholstered the built-in bench seating,” says Carlson, who also sourced an oil-on-canvas piece by SF’s Laura Roebuck (lauraroebuck.com). Brutus chairs from Studio Nordhaven (studionordhaven.com) also grace the cozy space.

PRIMARY SUITE
“The primary suite felt like a hotel room, and not in a good way,” laughs Carlson. “We brought in shou sugi ban wall treatment, sourced unique pieces from Coup D’Etat (coupdetatsf.com) and a stunning photo of San Quentin Beach by Drew Altizer (drewaltizer.com) via Stephanie Breitbard Fine Arts. Everything is bold, sculptural, quiet and approachable.”
Standout pieces include Armor pendants by Konekt (konektstudio.com), a sling chair from Coup D’Etet, a custom rug by FQ Designs Group (fqdesigns.com) and Kamba Euro pillows from Susan Connor New York (susanconnorny.com).

HOW THE HOME IS LIVING
“The couple continues to love their sanctuary,” says Carlson. “They feel like their home is a work of art and something creative and new. They live just as we had intended, enjoying the composition we all created as a collaboration.”
