Meanwhile, Back at the Fisher Collection...

Nina Martin, with additional reporting by Adam Brinklow and Katy Quigg | May 23, 2013 | Lifestyle Story Culture

Until the new building is ready, Doris and Don Fisher’s extraordinary collection is staying put at Gap headquarters (SFMOMA members will have access every Thursday for the next three years). But out of sight does not mean out of mind. For months, an SFMOMA team has been poring over every piece, creating a kind of Fisherpedia for curators and researchers to use now and in the future. ”It stimulates your thinking about what you can do with the collection—how it can be interpreted and shown,” says senior curator Gary Garrels. The next step is figuring out where in the new building the collection will go. In some instances, entire galleries will be devoted to Fisher artworks. In others, Fisher pieces and existing SFMOMA works will cohabit. Are Garrels and his colleagues using their newfound insights to sweet-talk other local collectors into donating their own Warhols and Closes? ”Yes!” Garrels laughs. ”Yes, yes, yes!”
