Gucci

Luxury resale is bigger than ever. As explained by TheRealReal, the pandemic ushered in a wave of shopping focused on high-value bags, watches and sneakers.

And over the last two years, the focus of that interest has shifted around.

For starters, Gucci earned the top spot among top brands in luxury resale according to TheRealReal’s Luxury Resale Report published on Aug. 24. It’s no surprise given last year’s release of House of Gucci, A-lister Harry Styles’ frequent collaborations with creative director Alessandro Michele and the ultra-buzzy Gucci Love Parade (among a host of other fabulous moments over the past year).

And while the Italian fashion house is top of mind for everyone, you’ll want to secure what TheRealReal deems as the It-Bag Comeback: the Gucci Blondie.

Also seen on the runway in Gucci’s Love Parade, the vintage piece has recently been climbing the charts on TheRealReal, making it the next big, trendy get for fashion collectors.

What’s more, just behind Gucci in the top 10 brands in luxury resale are Louis Vuitton and Chanel, which is rising in popularity among Millennials. Dior and Balenciaga also moved up the rank similarly due to vintage comebacks and peak cultural relevance— we’re looking at you Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber.

Dior

Overall, from 2021 to 2022, TheRealReal membership grew by 5.3 million for a total of more than 28 million members. The report found that not only are people buying more, but that they’re reselling more.

“In a world that’s currently filled with the unknown and the unexpected, TRR members are finding escapism with the reliability and discoverability of the secondhand market,” said president and CEO Rati Sahi Levesque. Between primary market supply constraints, inflation woes and the acceleration of the climate crisis, shoppers and consignors alike are seeing the economic, environmental and emotional value of resale.”

In fact, the joy of newness and gamification kept shoppers continually engaging, and 43 percent of them say sustainability is a deciding factor in what they buy, in addition to personal style being a top priority.

As explained by TheRealReal, Millennials are the No. 1 resale generation, but Gen X resells the most, while Gen Z resells the fastest. Still, Bloomers splurge the most and The Silent Generation earns the most.
