Napa Schools Cancelled Thanks to Earthquake Day

Scott Lucas | August 25, 2014 | Lifestyle Story City Life

The aftermath of the Napa Quake has schools across the Napa Valley Unified School District canceling classes today, according to the Chronicle. But school children are the only ones celebrating, as teachers and staff reported to the 25 campuses of the district to sort through the damage.

Some kids get all the breaks.

In a message posted on its website, the school district wrote, "Our first priority is the safety of our students and staff. Our facilities teams immediately began to evaluate the status of our buildings this morning. Professional engineering staff are still working on that evaluation. We will allow students to return to classrooms only when we can verify that the classrooms are safe. With that goal in mind, we will NOT have school for students on Monday August 25th at any Napa Valley Unified School District schools. We are asking teachers to report to their schools sites at 10 a.m. on Monday, and all other support and office staff to report to their work sites at their regular times."

No schools have been red-tagged by emergency responders as of this morning. However, the state of damage—and the amount of cleanup needed—is still unknown. District officials have not yet made a determination as to whether schools will be open on Tuesday, and will make an announcement at one p.m. today.

Hey students? Need something to do today. It's harvest season up there. Those Cabernet Franc grapes aren't going to pick themselves, you know.
