Playing N64 at Soda Popinski’s.

New-School Bars, Old-School Games

These new watering holes offer Nintendo, Playstation, and various other delights of your parents’ rec room—minus the questionably stained couch.

Soda Popinski’s In case the reference isn’t immediately clear, Soda’s is named for the booze-swilling, hard-fighting (and, yes, wildly stereotypically Russian) character from Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! Aptly enough, the bar’s lounge area contains an operational Nintendo system hooked up to a flat-screen tv, and its cocktail list doesn’t disappoint on the vodka front. 1548 California St. (near Polk St.)

Woodbury The Alchemist’s basement-level little brother, which opened in april, takes the man-cave aesthetic to delightful heights, with taxidermy aplenty, wood paneling on nearly every surface, and a first-come, first-served video game setup complete with both an atari and a Super Nintendo. 685 3rd St. (near Townsend St.)

Bar Basic Don’t be fooled by the name. this mission bay neighborhood joint is the kind of place that invites you to stay awhile, with a five-hour-long (!) happy hour ($4 beers and $5 martinis from 4 to 9 p.m. on weekdays), a jukebox, and a Mario Kart–equipped nintendo. 510 Brannan St. (near 4th St.)
