The change of season also means a reinvigoration of the San Francisco restaurant scene. As the sun begins to shine more, it is also the perfect time to venture around the city and be among the first to try these recently opened or up-and-coming upscale eateries set to open this springtime.
701 3rd Street, on the 12th floor of Hyatt Place Hotel / Website
Just opened in mid-February, Kaiyo Rooftop is a tropical oasis serving up a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine with a stunning elevated view of SoMa. Enjoy delicately prepared grilled scallops, tiraditos, ceviche, and sushi all fresh using regional ingredients. The same handcrafted method is used for their craft-cocktails, highlighting fine Peruvian Pisco and Japanese whisky through their integration of traditionally local spices, fruits, and botanicals. With the first of the Kaiyo Rooftop’s team’s restaurant being Kaiyo in Cow Hollow, their inventive new bar and restaurant is an opulent and culturally unique island retreat.

Originally from the Oakland French pop-up Bistro Kosuke, chef Kosuke Tada will now be opening this French bistro in the Mission along with his wife Grace Mitchell Tada in April. On the Paris Michelin Star Chef’s tasting menu will be a seasonally rotating four-course meal, featuring natural and fresh ingredients such as pâté en croûte, yellowtail with a pomelo sabayon, and pork with figs and roasted eggplant. The tasting menu will be about $82, and will be paired with Exclusive French and California wine.

Just opened on March 2nd, Schlok’s is serving out fresh hot bagels in NoPa. What makes these bagels popular is their distinct chewy, dense texture with a heavily seasoned and roasted outer crust. Coming in flavors like sesame, poppyseed, sea salt, and everything, when paired with whipped schmears of chopped lox, baked tomato, and garlic, this fast-serving takeout shop is a perfect morning stop right near Alamo Square and the Panhandle.

Set to open next month, Ban Sang will feature a $70 modern Korean tasting menu that incorporates Japanese and French flavors and techniques, such as tomato basil kimchi and tuna tartar. Led by experienced Michelin Star co-chefs of Daeho, Ethan Min and Jin Lim, the two are gearing up for a soft opening in April with details to come.

Recently unveiled last month, Taksim offers Turkish cuisine that takes contemporary, gastronomic approaches to traditional recipes. Only open for weekday dinners, with a specifically curated seasonal menu and unique selections of European wines and floral spiced cocktails, this two-story restaurant adds an innovative, yet comforting Mediterranean flair in SoMa.
