A New York City couple relocates to SF’s Noe Valley, dramatically transforming a home with gorgeous views.
The living room feautures a Dock sofa by Lissoni from B&B Italia.
THE PROJECT
Moving from the Big Apple to San Francisco and finding the perfect home was no small task for a New York couple with two children under 5. They found a four-story, 4,000-square-foot Noe Valley gem with staggering views. Seven years ago, the home was redesigned by SF architect Chris McMahon of McMahon Architects + Studio (chrismcmahon.com), but the spaces needed an aesthetic boost.
Counter stools from DWR and accessories from Mill Valley’s Poet and the Bench grace the functional kitchen.
THE TEAM
The couple tapped Kirsten Pike Design (kirstenpikedesign.com) to tackle the project and partial redesign. Pike and her team selected the home’s furniture, accessories and art for every indoor and outdoor space. “I work with the client’s sense of aesthetics and develop a look and feel that is personalized to that specific client,” says Pike. “We don’t have a signature look. I elevate everything to go above and beyond every client’s expectation so they feel their home is a true reflection of them.”
The light and airy home is kid-friendly and doesn’t have a single sharp edge anywhere.
THE GOALS
While the overall feeling of the home embraces an adult vibe, Pike says the couple also wanted their home to feel comfortable and alluring to children. “There are no sharp edges on any furniture,” she says. “The individual pieces are edgy and fun, but children can tumble without getting hurt. The clients wanted the feeling to be modern, playful, sophisticated, inviting and livable. We used color and fun patterns with discretion and just enough to appeal to the child in all of us.”

LIVING & DINING ROOMS
Above all, Pike says this space needed to seat eight for a range of family activities. “It’s a lively yet soothing atmosphere that reflects a fun-loving family,” she says. The team selected a Dock sofa by Lissoni from B&B Italia (bebitalia.com), a Bloom swivel chair by Kenneth Cobonpue (kennethcobonpue.com), a marble pouf from Artemest (artemest.com) and a custom coffee table designed by Pike. A custom wool and silk rug from Roja Rugs (rojarugs.com) lines the room. The dining room features a Saarinen dining table, Papilio swivel dining chairs from B&B Italia, a 13-foot bench designed by Pike and table sculptures from Artemest.
The home’s outdoor spaces are as inviting as they are beautiful, with ample seating for entertaining guests any time of year.
KITCHEN
The home’s hub blends sophistication and functionality. Pike’s team adeptly added lighting and counter stools from DWR (dwr.com) and accessories and decor from Mill Valley’s Poet and the Bench (poetandthebench.com) and SummerHouse (summerhousemillvalley.com).
The primary suite features a bed from Room Service 360, seating from Ligne Roset, tables from 1st Dibs and wallpaper from Schumacher.
PRIMARY SUITE
“The look and feel of the suite are soothing, comfortable and inviting,” says Pike, noting that the bed is from Italy’s Room Service 360 (roomservice360.com), seating from Ligne Roset (ligne-roset.com), tables from 1st Dibs (1stdibs.com), wallpaper from Schumacher (schumacher.com) and floor lamps from Roche Bobois (roche-bobois.com). A lovely artistic touch above the custom bed includes handmade, custom maps showing Manhattan and SF.
Scupltural seating matches art in the home and offers gorgeous views of San Francisco’s Noe Valley neighborhood.
HOW THE HOME IS LIVING
Pike says her clients have been effusive about the project. Recently, they said they appreciated her flexibility in working around their busy schedules and how she prioritized personalized, face-to-face coordination. “They love how their home is modern, playful, inviting and livable, and they’ve enjoyed sharing their space with family and friends,” says Pike.
