A Noe Valley Edwardian home receives a complete transformation, drawing inspiration from French architecture.
The 1911 Edwardian gets new life with a top-to-bottom renovation.
The Project
A couple with a 5-year-old daughter owns a three-level 1911 Edwardian home located in Noe Valley. The 3,387-square-foot property, close to restaurants and shops, is perched on a hill with exceptional views of downtown San Francisco. With an eye for creating a home that served their family stylistically and functionally, the couple knew it needed a significant renovation.
THE TEAM
The couple selected Hana Mattingly, principal designer at Innen Studio (innenstudio.com), for the project. “The homes we design are sophisticated and inviting,” says Mattingly. “Striking a balance between minimalism and richness, we prioritize using natural materials and warm textures to create grounded, layered spaces suitable for modern living.”
Innen Studio’s work encompasses all design aspects, from interior architecture to decoration. “Every project is distinctive, with the narrative unfolding through deeply comprehending the client’s preferences and inspirations,” says Mattingly. “For example, we love to find out where they like to vacation, their favorite books and films, their hobbies and where they spend the most time in their home.”
For this project, Mattingly says she drew upon the expertise of her architect, Rebecca Katkin of Katkin Architecture (@katkinarch), landscape designer Stephanie Stephens of Stephens Design Studio (@stephensdesignstudio) and general contractor Ronan Hanley of DKG Construction (@dkgconstruction).
The home offers plenty of outdoor living space.
PROJECT SCOPE
“The clients trusted my vision from the start,” says Mattingly. “I came in before construction, giving me free rein on all architectural components, permanent fixtures and materials.”
Mattingly says she looked to French architects, specifically Joseph Dirard, when designing the home. “Since it was built in 1911, the home has a similar historic quality to many apartments in Paris, and we kept most of the architectural elements original while adding modern details when it came to stone, cabinetry and lighting— something Dirand did especially well. History and modernity living in harmony was the goal.”
The living room features a shelving niche flanking the Chesneys fireplace and vintage boucle chairs.
LIVING ROOM
“Our goal was to modernize the space while embracing the core Edwardian architectural components like the coved ceiling, ornate door and window trim and narrow hardwood floors,” says Mattingly, who eliminated a bulky built-in cabinet that flanked the fireplace and opted for a more minimal shelving niche. The move allows an appreciation for a new Chesneys (chesneys.co.uk) fireplace to its fullest.
“For the color palette, we chose warm and textural materials,” says Mattingly. “A lime paint washes the walls of the room. A soft petit granite limestone anchors the space at the fireplace. Wool and boucle fabrics cover the furnishing, and patina brass light fixtures create a lived-in feel.”
The Innen Studio team completed the space with a sofa from Quintus Home (quintushome.com), vintage boucle chairs, a limestone coffee table by Stahl & Band (stahlandband.com), a 9841 Mahal rug by Marc Phillips Rugs (marcphillipsrugs.com). Other magical touches include a Maureen Fullam (maureenfullam.com) mirror from March (marchsf.com), artwork by Marta Johansen (@martaelisejohansen), custom oval globe lighting from Gallery L7 (galleryl7inc.com) and sconce from Plug (pluglighting.com).
“This room serves as a play zone and TV-watching area,” says Mattingly, who crafted a low built-in media cabinet— providing easy access to toys, craft supplies and board games—to boost functionality. “Recognizing the need for durability, we selected furnishings made from wool and performance materials to withstand kids’ craft messiness. We added a TV disguised as art by featuring Bess Friday’s (@bessfriday) “Louisiana” photograph.
Standout pieces include a Bronson sectional and Tula coffee table from Croft House (crofthouse.com), a swivel chair from Disc Interiors (discinteriors.com) and a solid oak cube side table and plaster shell uplight from Rose Uniacke (roseuniacke.com). A Paragon Birch rug by Armadillo (armadillo-co.com) lines the room, and a vintage 1950s metal lamp from 1stDibs (1stdibs.com) adds even more interest to the space.
Mattingly says the family is also fond of the lower-level seating area. “We love a moody library moment where there isn’t a lot of direct sunlight,” she says. “It felt like the perfect place to curl up with a book since our clients are avid readers.” The team included an Anders ceiling light from Pinch Design (pinchdesign.com).
The couple loves to cook, so designer Hana Mattingly included a lot of specialty storage for spices, appliances and cookware.
DINING ROOM
“We wanted the dining room to feel simple, yet have every piece be intentional and carefully chosen,” says Mattingly, whose team selected a large Leslie Williamson (@lesliewilliamson) photograph via Studio Ahead (studioahead.com), a Jacob May (jacob-may.com) dining table and a ceramic sculpture from Lost Art Salon (lostartsalon.com).
KITCHEN
Cooking is central to the lives of the homeowners, so they wanted a space that offered endless functionality. “With the help of our architect, we undertook a significant layout transformation, eliminating a peninsula and introducing a stand-alone island at the center to anchor the space,” says Mattingly. “We also included a lot of specialty storage for spices, appliances and cookware. Design-wise, we took risks regarding our stone selection, opting for a dramatic marble paired beautifully with our rift-sawn oak cabinets.”
The family benefits from SQ counter stools by David Gaynor Design (davidgaynordesign.com), ONOS pendants by Hector Finch (hectorfinch.com) and Henry faucet and pot filler from Waterworks (waterworks.com).
Innen Studio’s team ensured that each space offers incredible functionality for the busy family.
PRIMARY SUITE
“Like the living room, we loved the coved ceilings and wanted to embrace the original Edwardian architectural components while adding a monochromatic, modern feel with the paint and furnishings,” says Mattingly, who says she loves how specs of blue in the Liam Stevens (liamstevens.com) artwork looks above the bed mirrors in the room’s vintage rug. The suite also features a Nolen bed from Community Manufacturing (communitymfg.com), nightstands from Disc Interiors (discinteriors.com), a Tangent 7 flush mount light by Allied Maker (alliedmaker.com), ceramic table lamps by Danny Kaplan Studio (dannykaplanstudio.com) and drapes by Rose Tarlow (rosetarlow.com).
HOW THE HOME IS LIVING
“Our clients have expressed how happy they are with their new home and often comment on missing the renovation process,” says Mattingly. “This is the highest compliment for a designer. I’m so glad we could turn a stressful and often daunting process into something fun.”
The quiet beauty of the primary suite includes a Nolen bed from Community Manufacturing.
