Situated among the creative shops and delectable eateries on the vibrant and artistic Valencia Street lies Paxton Gate- an eccentric oddities and garden boutique that is absolutely worth the visit.
Stepping inside this unassuming, yet unique store leads you into a one-of-a kind wonderland of the most ornate vintage trinkets, crystals, chic macabre taxidermy, and gorgeous house plants.
With all of their fascinating merchandise ethically sourced, Paxton Gate’s philosophy is founded on respecting the natural world and presenting its historical and entomological beauty to all those curious.
Taxidermied animals humanely collected grandly line the walls and shelves of their spacious retail location, inviting customers to appreciate their perfectly preserved natural beauty.
From rare animal skulls to loose bones and delicately displayed butterflies and other iridescent insects, all of their items invite you to purchase them as your statement jewelry or new home decor centerpiece, knowing that they have all been sourced conscientiously.
Paxton gate first came to glorious life in 1992 by two brilliant landscape designers who desired to have an eccentric and fun landscaping store. What started as a business to sell unique garden items soon expanded into including “treasures and oddities inspired by the garden and the natural sciences,” featuring collections of mounted exotic insects, rare plants, and more.
Today the popular landmark on Valencia continues to uphold this vintage curiosities-type aesthetic, with the venue brimming with something for everyone.
The store also continues to the back with their large library, garden selections, and patio. Various carnivorous plants, inventive gardening equipment, and posh glassware all fill up the back half of the peculiar store, with their backyard containing the most serene oasis.
Additionally, Paxton Gate also has a more kid-friendly branch called Paxton Gate Curiosities for Kids, which features unusual toys, puppets, and intriguing science lessons such as shadow-puppetry and small animal taxidermy.
Paxton Gate prides themselves on being ethical, weird, and having something that will cater to everyone. Their stunningly ingenious shop is located on 824 Valencia Street and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Definitely take time to step in next time you are stroll down Mission’s lively street, because you will be enthralled if not from their lovely oddities, from their gorgeous garden and backyard.
