Public Bikes Shifts Gears

Local cycle brand Public isn’t content to be known solely for its growing number of candycolored city bikes coasting through the Mission and Temescal. This month the company is unveiling the inaugural Public Works Poster Project at its three stores in SoMa, the Mission, and Jack London Square (FOR LOCATIONS, VISIT PUBLICBIKES.COM).

Founder Rob Forbes enlisted 28 of the world’s top designers to create 40-by-60-inch posters reflecting the theme of public space, from “I Heart NY” creator Milton Glaser and New Yorker illustrator Roz Chast to Bay Area art and graphic design stars like Kit Hinrichs, Michael Mabry, Michael Schwab, and Jennifer Morla. The works will be exhibited at the California College of the Arts and SPUR in October before being unfurled in fellow bike-centric capitals New York and Toronto.

Here, a first look at five of the project’s frameworthy designs ($50–$500)
