After the 49ers beat one of the best teams in the league last weekend, fans were hoping for an encore performance from Colin Kaepernick in Seattle last night. Instead, they got his worst performance of the year and a devastating 42-13 loss at the hands of a division rival. Even worse, there is still a chance--depending on the Niners' last game against Arizona--that the Seahawks could overtake the 49ers for the NFC West title.
The Seahawks came into the game with the second-best scoring defense in the NFL, so it was no surprise that the 49ers struggled. But their number-one defense gave up 42 points, which has many people much more worried than Kaepernick's struggles. To add insult to injury, star tight end Vernon Davis went down with a concussion and wide receiver Mario Manningham joined the list of hobbled players when he banged up his knee in the second half.
Fans of the 49ers can rest easy--the team is in the playoffs. But will they lose the division crown? Are they in line to become a Wild Card team instead, and face a much tougher road to the Super Bowl than they have now? On Twitter, the fan base is divided again. Here are the top 10 tweets about the 49ers ongoing QB controversy, after it gained some steam last night:
One fan thought the results would have been vastly different with Alex Smith at quarterback:
But others point out that someone else might be to blame for the loss:
Some maintain Smith will take the team farther in the long run:
But we have to remember that Seattle is a difficult venue:
@KGWorldwide: Kaepernick was not the first QB to struggle in SEA, certainly won't be the last. Injuries are much bigger concern than the QB spot to me.
And still others like both QB's, but want the veteran in for the playoffs:
@shaun_holkko: I love Colin Kaepernick, but I just think the 49ers should start Alex Smith in the playoffs, he's more experienced, and just a better QB.
Though many fans disagree with that idea:
@SirTannerTellez: All everyone is gonna talk about tomorrow on espn is if kaepernick should be the starter and the answer is yes. He is clearly better
One fan on Twitter even resorted to drastic measures for Team Smith:
But Team Kaepernick fans say one bad game is no reason to fret:
@colbydub12: One blowout and people are writing articles wondering if Kaepernick is the guy.
And one confident fan even tweeted ESPN, declaring a Super Bowl title with a QB switch-back:
Taking the whole controversy into account, many people feel it's still Kaepernick's job:
