Arriving home with a newborn can be overwhelming for any parent. An infant requires around-the-clock care, and many new mothers and fathers feel inexperienced while entering parenthood. Jennifer Darwin recognized a prevalent need for enhanced postpartum support and embarked on a mission to revolutionize the postnatal period for families from all walks of life. Understanding the value of hands-on guidance from seasoned professionals, Darwin established The Village Postnatal Retreat Center, a haven for new parents to become more confident and empowered nurturers to their little ones.
Darwin’s professional background in pregnancy and childbirth support spans decades. She previously served as a labor and delivery nurse before founding Golden Gate Doula Associates in 2016, where she culminated her dream team of doulas, lactation consultants, sleep specialists and pelvic floor therapists. In 2023, Darwin launched The Village Postnatal Retreat Center to accommodate families with extensive hands-on services and resources as they journey into parenting.
Inspired by international models with more positive postpartum outcomes, Darwin delved into research and discovered that other countries offered comprehensive care facilities for parents and their newborns. The realization that the United States lacked dedicated postpartum retreat centers ignited this founder’s mission to provide such transformative modalities. Today, The Village Postnatal Retreat Center is only the second of its kind in the nation and the pioneering establishment on the West Coast.
At the core of The Village is a highly skilled staff meticulously assembled by Darwin, who all undergo a rigorous vetting process. Clients are guaranteed top-notch service from the best birth workers in the Bay Area for the duration of their choice.
The retreat center, situated in San Francisco’s Japan Town, provides 24/7 assistance and education from seasoned professionals, prioritizing physical healing and emotional well-being. Its concierge service helps each client create a customized postpartum plan before birth. Families can check into studio and one-bedroom suites equipped with heated bidet toilets, rainfall showerheads and glider rocking chairs for the utmost comfort. A 24-hour nursery is on-site, so parents can rest assured their babies are in safe hands while they enjoy much-needed downtime. Newborn classes, parent groups and therapeutic massages are also available.
Beyond its immediate offerings, The Village is actively involved in initiatives to improve maternal outcomes. Darwin and her team recently collaborated with Sutter Health to provide birth doulas for women of color, recognizing the higher medical risks they face during childbirth. Additionally, Darwin sits on a committee at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) that aims to improve the patient delivery experience through professional birth doula services.
